Welcome to the University of York Jazz Orchestra pages. The band is made up of players from members of all parts of the university student community and is a single seat band that auditions every year. The ethos of the Jazz Orchestra is to present several concerts each academic year that explore various aspects of contemporary big band repertoire. Recent concerts have focussed on the music of Chris McGregor, Moacir Santos, Maria Schneider, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Hugh Masekela, John Warren, Hans Koller, and Julian Argüelles. We also feature original compositions and arrangements written especially for the band.
NATIONAL CENTRE FOR EARLY MUSIC CONCERT
On 21 June 2013 the University of York Jazz Orchestra will present a concert of contemporary jazz music from Chile, curated by the bands tenor saxophone player Ricardo Alvarez.
We will be joined by guest artist Mark Bassey (trombone) and the first half of the concert will focus on the music of Ensamble Quintessence, one of Chile's most popular contemporary jazz ensembles.
The whole of the second half will be the premier of a new composition by Ricardo Alvarez written for the Jazz Orchestra. The piece is Alvarez's response to the Feast of La Tirana celebrations. The Feast is a colourful syncretic religious festival held in northern Chile every July and features singing, dancing, a spectacular devils dance, drumming and brass bands.
The band rehearses each Monday of term from 5.00-7.00pm. For any questions, or further information, please email jonathan.eato [at] york.ac.uk
