Sounds from South Africa
Featuring special guests Martin France and Chris Batchelor
For this concert of music by South African composers the University of York Jazz Orchestra were joined by guest soloists Chris Batchelor (trumpet) and Martin France (drums).
The University Jazz Collective also added a selection of small group music by South African’s and musicians closely associated with South African jazz.
Much of the music in this programme is available for sale from sheetmusic.co.za but the concert also featured two arrangements written especially for the University of York Jazz Orchestra. Zezo Olímpio gave us his take on Bheki Mseleku’s ‘Mamelodi’ whilst Matt Postle arranged two compositions by Abdullah Ibrahim - ‘Joan Cape Town Flower’ and ‘Msunduza’.
